BluGreens was founded to create a business that places sustainability at its core. A business which empowers coastal communities, enhances the local environment and supports the regional economy.

To put the planet first we landed on seaweed farming — but with a twist.

We are pioneering a sustainable and integrated seaweed farming model in the UK. This model tackles the challenges facing the nascent UK seaweed farming industry through collaboration and diversification.

Our approach is to work with harbours to leverage existing marine infrastructure, such as moorings and quayside access, for inshore seaweed cultivation. This innovative approach allows for inshore seaweed cultivation during the off-season (October to May), which significantly reduces costs and mitigates competition for ocean space.

Our model aims to work closely with harbours around the country, employing local operators at each site to ensure farming units remain small and to diversify local employment. This proven model has been piloted in Plymouth in partnership with Cattewater Harbour Commissioners and will be used to develop a replicable "harbour farming blueprint" that can be adopted nationwide.
